Wimbledon Introduces Video Review Technology for the First Time.

The Championships tennis court with replay technology

The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in implementing replay systems.

Replay systems will make its debut at Wimbledon this year.

Athletes will gain the right to challenge specific calls made by the chair umpire, echoing the system already in use at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.

The new system is slated for use on Centre Court and Court One throughout the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles matches.

This step comes just a year after the All England Club implemented electronic line calling, which effectively ended the longstanding role of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Players cannot to dispute the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the official to review other decisions, including:

  • If a ball has bounced twice.
  • If a ball touched an opponent's racquet or person during play.
  • Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.

Importantly, there will be no limit on the amount of challenges a player can ask for.

A Recent Example

A recent example occurred in a recent tournament recently, where a top player used the video challenge against his opponent.

Draper admitted it was a tough situation for the umpire, but believed his opponent had "played the rules quite well."

The umpire watched a replay and determined Draper was responsible for interference, granting the point to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

Video reviews are not exclusive to Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have the system in place at all of its tournaments.

Other Changes

Another innovation at The Championships this year will be the introduction of graphical cues on displays to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This solves situations where fans have sometimes been uncertain if a ball was in or out.

In other news, with precisely 100 days to go until the start of the tournament, the AELTC have also revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
