EU Could Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson States

The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unjustified” travel bans issued by the United States against five Europeans working on combating online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions targeted individuals that were central to efforts to introduce laws regulating American tech companies.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to coerce American platforms to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in criticizing the move.

The bans were imposed on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

The DSA is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities argue the rules are essential to control inflammatory language and disinformation.

This row threatens to become part of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict between Washington and European institutions.

Other Developments in the News

In other judicial news:

  • A Pacific Island nation has agreed to accept dozens of individuals from the US in return for additional aid, after signing a formal agreement with US authorities.

Furthermore, a Democratic lawmaker has initiated legal action to demand the removal of a political figure’s name from a well-known cultural institution in the capital.

Experts have also noted that comments regarding foreign petroleum resources reflect a wider ideology in some quarters of “economic expansionism”, drawing comparisons with historical international strategies.
